Yoga During Pregnancy
Prenatal yoga is one of the safest forms of exercise during pregnancy — recommended by most OBs and midwives. Done properly (with a teacher who knows prenatal modifications), it relieves common pregnancy discomforts, builds strength for labor, and gives you a community of other expecting moms.
What a Prenatal Class Includes
- Length: 60 minutes
- Pace: Gentle. No vigorous flows.
- Postures: Modified standing poses (for hip and pelvic floor strength), seated stretches (for back relief), supported reclined poses, breath work, optional birth-preparation positioning
- Avoided: Deep twists, prone postures (lying on belly), deep backbends, anything that compresses the abdomen, hot rooms
What Prenatal Yoga Helps With
- Back pain — the #1 reason most expectant moms come
- Hip and pelvic discomfort
- Swelling in legs and feet
- Better sleep
- Breath-work that helps during labor
- Connection with baby — the quiet, intentional time is precious
- Community — meeting other moms-to-be
When to Start & Stop
Most students start in the second trimester (after week 13) once the early-pregnancy fatigue and nausea ease. With your OB's clearance, you can practice all the way to your due date — many of our students do. After delivery, we recommend waiting 6 weeks before returning to a regular yoga class.
