What Yin Is
Yin Yoga is a slow, mostly seated or floor-based practice where each posture is held quietly for three to five minutes. Where Vinyasa works the muscles, Yin works the deeper layers — the fascia, ligaments, and joints. It is the perfect counterbalance to busy, active lifestyles.
What a Yin Class Feels Like
- Length: 75 minutes
- Pace: Very slow. Long holds.
- Postures: Mostly floor-based shapes — Butterfly, Dragon, Sphinx, Saddle, Square. Supported with bolsters and blankets.
- Effort: Minimal physical effort. You will be still for most of the class.
- Best for: Tight hips, lower back issues, stress, anyone over 50, athletes who need to balance their training
Who Benefits Most
- Desk workers — tight hips, neck, shoulders from sitting
- Runners, cyclists, weight lifters — chronically tight hamstrings, IT bands, and hip flexors
- People over 50 — maintains joint mobility and counters age-related tightness
- Anyone with chronic stress — Yin activates the parasympathetic nervous system. You leave feeling deeply calm.
Is It Boring?
The first few times, holding a posture for five minutes can feel weird. By class three or four, most students start to crave it. The stillness becomes addictive.
