Yoga FAQ

Honest answers to the questions we hear from new students. Don't see your question? Give us a call — we are happy to talk it through.

Getting Started

I have never done yoga before. Is your studio for me?

Yes. We have a dedicated Beginners Yoga class and a slower-paced Hatha class that are designed specifically for people who have never done yoga. Both are welcoming, beginner-friendly, and walk you through everything. Your first class is free.

Which class should I take first?

Brand new: Beginners or Hatha. Athletic background: try Vinyasa Flow. Stressed, tight, or recovering: Restorative or Yin. Pregnant: Prenatal. Not sure: call us and we will help you pick.

What does my first class cost?

Nothing. First class is free for any new student. After that we offer drop-ins, pre-paid class cards (save money per class), and monthly unlimited memberships. Current rates are confirmed when you call to book.

How early should I arrive for my first class?

10-15 minutes early. The teacher will get you set up, show you where everything is, ask about injuries, and answer questions before class starts.

What to Wear & Bring

What should I wear?

Stretchy clothes you can move in. Leggings, athletic shorts, t-shirt or fitted tank top. Avoid loose tops that fall over your head in Down Dog. No shoes — yoga is barefoot.

Do I need to bring my own mat?

No. We provide mats, blocks, blankets, bolsters, and straps. Bring water and a willing attitude.

Should I eat before class?

A light snack 1-2 hours before is fine. Avoid a heavy meal in the 90 minutes before — many postures compress the belly.

Physical Concerns

I am not flexible. Can I still do yoga?

Yes — in fact, inflexible people benefit the most. Yoga makes you flexible. You will not be the only inflexible person in the room.

I am older / out of shape / overweight. Is yoga for me?

Yes. We have students from age 16 to 80, every body type, every fitness level. Tell the teacher about anything you want them to know and they will offer modifications.

I have an injury or chronic condition. Can I practice?

Almost always yes. Tell the teacher before class. For more involved limitations — recent surgery, severe injury, complex chronic condition — we recommend starting with a private 1-on-1 session so we can design a practice around your body.

I am pregnant. Can I take regular classes?

With your OB or midwife clearance, you can take Hatha, Restorative, or Yin classes (with prenatal modifications). For a class specifically built for pregnancy, take Prenatal Yoga. Avoid Vinyasa Flow during pregnancy.

Membership & Logistics

Do I have to sign up for a class in advance?

Drop-ins are welcome. To guarantee a spot in Vinyasa, Saturday classes, or the Outdoor Lake Yoga, call ahead. Outdoor classes always require advance reservation.

Can I cancel a class card or membership?

Class cards are refundable within 14 days of purchase if unused. Monthly memberships cancel any time — cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing cycle.

Do you offer student / military / senior discounts?

Yes. 15% off for students, teachers, active military, veterans, and first responders. 10% off for ages 65+. Bring an ID the first time you purchase.

Pickwick Lake & Visiting

I am only visiting Pickwick Lake for a weekend. Can I drop in?

Absolutely. Drop-in classes are welcome and your first class is still free even as a visitor. We get a lot of weekend students from rental cottages, marinas, and second-homers. Just call ahead so we expect you.

When are the Outdoor Lake Yoga classes?

Saturday mornings at sunrise, May through October, weather permitting. We email exact times the week of and notify everyone the night before if weather forces us indoors.

Where exactly is the studio?

In the Pickwick Dam / Counce area of Hardin County, TN. We share exact address when you reserve your first class.
